A New Door Opens for Filipino United Methodist Ministers in Australia

An exciting partnership between two denominations within the wider Wesleyan Methodist family is opening doors for Filipino pastors to continue their calling in Australia.
On 16 August 2026, Rev. Dr. Lex Akers, National Superintendent of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Australia, and retired Bishop Rodolfo A. Juan, representing the United Methodist Church in the Philippines, signed a Memorandum of Understanding creating a pathway for ordained UMC Philippines ministers to be recognized for ministry within the WMC of Australia.
Itβs an agreement about ministerial recognition β but behind it is a much bigger story of migration, mission, and Christian partnership.
Over many years, Australia has become home to a growing Filipino community. Among those who have made Australia home are faithful Methodists, including pastors who arrive with years of theological education, pastoral experience, and recognized ordination behind them.
They don’t arrive without a calling. They don’t arrive without training. And they don’t arrive without a story of God’s work already evident in their lives.
Yet moving between countries and denominations can create unexpected barriers. Different educational systems, ministry requirements, and credentialing processes can mean that an experienced ordained minister finds their calling difficult to navigate in a new setting.
The new agreement seeks to change that.
Rather than establishing a separate denominational structure in Australia, the United Methodist Church in the Philippines has chosen partnership with the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Australia.
Together, the two churches have developed a way of honoring the ministry training and experience these pastors already bring while preparing them to serve faithfully within the Australian context. It is, in many ways, about recognizing what God has already done.
