He Treats Us All The Same by Maxie Dunnam
Henry Jordan was a great all-pro defensive tackle who played with the Green Bay Packers back in the glory days of Vince Lombardi. Henry was as good with words as he was at sacking opposing quarterbacks. That made him a favorite with sports writers. One of his most widely quoted statements came when someone asked,
“Does Mr. Lombardi show any preference?”
“No sir,” Henry answered, “he treats us all the same – like dogs.”
The Bible is a little like that. It treats all of us the same. But not as dogs! Psalm 8 declares:
Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory in the heavens.
What is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet.
We are created a little lower than the angels and crowned with glory and honor. Our calling to rule over God’s creation as image bearers stretches the imagination! This makes all the difference in the world how we see ourselves. If we see ourselves as dogs, we will find ourselves acting like dogs and dogs eat dogs. But if we follow what the Bible tells us about ourselves and our neighbors (and yes even ‘those’ people). We may just see ourselves a little less than God, just a little lower than the angels. And maybe, how we act and how we relate to others will become God-like.
