Uniting Church in Sweden

If you’ve ever visited Sweden, you know it’s breathtakingly beautiful. Deep forests. Thousands of islands. Long summer evenings. But it’s also one of the most secular nations in the world. For many people, faith is viewed as something private, or even unnecessary.

And yet, the gospel continues to take root.

Back in 2011, three separate Swedish denominations – the United Methodist Church, the Baptist Union, and the Mission Covenant Church – looked at each other and realized something profound: We are stronger together than we are apart. They chose to lay down their historical brands to form something entirely new for the sake of mission: Equmeniakyrkan, the Uniting Church in Sweden.

Today, this unified body consists of roughly 60,000 members across more than 600 local congregations. It’s also worth noting — and this is genuinely encouraging — that the pace of membership decline has been slowing in recent years, dropping from losses of over 1,700 members a year at the church’s founding to under 600 a year now. That’s not explosive growth. But it might be the early shape of something stabilizing.

Their mission statement isn’t complex, but it’s demanding: “A church for all walks of life, where the encounter with Jesus Christ transforms me, you and the world.”

In communities where church attendance has steadily declined, the Uniting Church in Sweden is investing in the next generation, planting and renewing congregations, caring for creation, welcoming refugees and immigrants, and creating spaces where people can encounter Jesus with authenticity and hope. Their desire is to be what they often describe as “a church for the whole of life” – following Christ in every part of society, not just within church walls.

In downtown Stockholm, places like Immanuel Church are living this out by hosting vibrant services every single week in English, Korean, and Swedish to match their changing communities. They aren’t trying to preserve a museum; they are trying to reach a culture.

It’s easy to assume that secular places are spiritually empty. But history reminds us that God often does His most surprising work in difficult soil.

The Methodist movement itself was born as a renewal movement. Revival has always flourished where people were willing to believe that the Holy Spirit could awaken hearts again. That same prayer is needed today in Sweden.

Thank You for our brothers and sisters in the Uniting Church in Sweden. Thank You for their faithful witness in a nation where many have never experienced the transforming hope of Jesus Christ. Strengthen pastors, lay leaders, and congregations as they serve their communities with humility, courage, and love. Bless their ministries among children, youth, families, refugees, and those searching for purpose. Give them wisdom as they proclaim the gospel in a culture that often feels distant from faith. May Your Holy Spirit bring renewal throughout Sweden. Raise up a new generation of disciples who boldly follow Christ and joyfully share His love.
