Christmas In The South Pacific by Atu Lagi
Bula Vinaka and a big Christmas greetings from the beautiful Island of Fiji.
Christmas in Fiji is a time of celebration when nuclear and extended families gather. Those living in urban areas, cities, towns, and abroad will prepare for the long trip back home to their villages or homes for the festive season.
Preparations for carol singing, festivity celebrations, dancing and feasting are something to look forward to as well.
Christmas is the season when people take the time to meet and see each other, since many live far away or abroad, mostly away from the village.
The tradition is for families to gather (some even dress alike) to attend a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day service and see everyone while they remember why they set this time apart.
Christmas caroling around the cities, towns and villages is a prevalent practice, visiting their elders in rest homes to sing and grace them with gifts.
It’s also an opportunity to share the Christmas story with people in the communities they return to.
John 1 tells us Jesus came into the world and took on flesh. John 3:16 reminds us of the significance of the Christmas story. If there were no birth, if the Son had not taken the form of a human, then there would also be no Easter story, no salvation, no Kingdom come.
In a world where chaos, hatred and evil seem to be rising, Christ remains the answer. Jesus came, lived, died, rose from the dead, ascended to heaven and will come again in glory. This all started with his first coming as a child so long ago. Jesus is the hope that we long for.
Wishing everyone a merry Christmas from the beautiful Island of Fiji.
